This specimen was lot 23972 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "James II gold 5 Guineas 1687, 1st Bust, AU Details "Rim Filed" NCS, but in point of fact the rims are not affected while the entire edge has been planed off. None the less, the obverse and reverse count most and they host a lovely aged rose-gold patina, portrait and shield both sharp and pleasing. Probably worn by some aristocrat as jewelry at one time." This type is known for 1686-88 and with an elephant and castle privy mark (KM 460.2) for 1687-88. Both are rare and expensive.
