This specimen was lot 72318 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1624). London Mint; mm: trefoil. James I. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, VF Details. Obverse: Crowned and armored bust right; XII (mark of value) to left; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee. A wonderfully detailed Shilling with consistent pewter and steel gray surfaces. Some centuries-old scratches in the right obverse field are now little more than evidence of circulation. Rather seldom encountered and emanating from a popular series, we expect this piece will catch many eyes and bids." This shilling is from James's third coinage of 1619-25; the trefoil mintmark was used only in 1624. Milled coinage, trialled in the 1560's, would not supplant hammered coinage util the 1660's.
