The first specimen was lot 7487 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $810.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Lion Daalder, 1589. Nice strike with full legends on both sides. NGC AU-55." The second specimen was lot 8417 in Ponterio sale 160 (Baltimore, June 2011), where it sold for $460. The catalog description[2] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Holland. Lion Daalder, 1589. Toned with underlying luster. CHOICE VERY FINE." This type was struck 1576-77, 1585-93 and 1597-98. The SCWC lists a similar type (KM 11/Dav-4856) for 1601-05. "Lion" daalders were struck in Holland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen, especially well struck like this example. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary.
