Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 481
Cleve and Mark in 1789, from Putzger's atlas. Moers is between Essen and Geldern

This specimen was lot 481 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,032 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, MÖRS, Comté, Vincenz (1448-1493), AR Stüber, 1478. Imitation du vlieger de Groningen. D/ + MONET NOVA- MOERSSENEI Aigle bicéphale éployée au-dessus de l'écu incliné de Mörs. R/ ANNO- DNI M-CCCCL-XXVIII Croix pattée longue avec au centre la lettre S dans un losange. Extrêmement rare. Frappe faible. Beau. (Germany, county of Mörs, Vincent, 1448-93, silver stuiver of 1478, imitation of a vlieger of Groningen. Obverse: double-headed eagle over the arms of Mörs; reverse: date in Roman numerals, long cross with an "S" at the center in a lozenge. Extremely rare, weakly struck, Fine.)"

Moers was an insignificant county in the duchy of Cleve near its border with the archbishopric of Cologne. Cleve passed to the margrave of Brandenburg after the Thirty Years War but Moers was occupied by Dutch troops during the war. The vlieger was a piece of four patards but the ones we have posted on this site are from the sixteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2,06 g.

Catalog reference: Noss, Jülich, 36a; Levinson I-160a var.
