This specimen was lot 23132 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 1/2 Rupee, 1951. NGC MS-65. Fully lustrous with even, light golden toning. SCARCE this fine and only surpassed by a single example in the NGC population census." This type was struck 1950-51 and is common tho the proofs are rare. Smaller denominations had been minted as far back as the 1870's. The island remained under British rule until 1968.
Recorded mintage: 570,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 5.85 g, copper-nickel, 23.65 mm diameter.
