Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21355

The first specimen was lot 6793 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN. 1/2 Pahlavi, SH 1330 (1951). NGC MS-66. Mildly toned, beautiful unmarred surfaces with full luster throughout. Tied with one other piece as the finest certified." The second specimen was lot 21355 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "IRAN. High Relief 1/2 Pahlavi, SH 1330 (1951). NGC MS-64. Struck in impressive relief with soft tone over the surfaces. An absolute KEY ISSUE for Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who would become the last Persian monarch when revolution forced him into exile on January 16, 1979." This type, struck SH 1330-1353 during the reign of Muhammed Reza Shah (r. 1941-79), was minted to the standard of a British half sovereign. The relief was lowered in 1951 to reduce persistent striking weakness; the low relief variety is slightly more common for the date. The coins generally trade as bullion coins.

Recorded mintage: 98,000 (high and low relief).

Specification: 4.07 g, 0.900 fine gold, .117 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-102; KM-1149 (high relief), KM-1161 (low relief).
