from Heritage sale 3049, lot 31018
Greece H3049-31018r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31018 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Othon 2 Lepta 1857 MS63 Brown NGC. A scarce, two-year issue with mahogany-brown surfaces and fields that have retained an exciting amount of mint luster. Typically encountered with an uneven strike such as the one seen here, but its overall appearance is still considered strong for the type. Presently among only one other example at NGC in this top certified category, and seldom offered at any level." This type issued 1851 and 1857 only. There are also copper one, five and ten lepta (KM 30, 32, 29). Despite the substantial mintage, this type is scarce in nice condition. King Otto fell foul of the local politicians and was forced to abdicate in 1863.

Recorded mintage: 544,000.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM 31.
