This specimen was lot 364 in Sincona sale 31 (Zurich, October 2016), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,374 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA, 100 dinars 2001ce/1422ah AU RRR Pf." This type, struck with French and Arabic legends (shown here), honored the fourteenth anniversary of the revolution which overthrew the senile Habib Bourgiba in 1987 and the 19th Mediterranean Games. It was accompanied by a gold fifty dinars (KM 431) and a silver ten dinars (KM 378). It is unlikely to have circulated beyond the president's circle of cronies and supporters. Zine Ben Ali, Bourgiba's successor, was himself overthrown in 2011.
Recorded mintage: 375 proofs.
Specification: 38 g, .900 fine gold, 1.092 troy oz AGW, this specimen 37.99 g.
