This specimen was lot 32533 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 20000 Reis 1859 AU58 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint." This type, struck 1853-89, is among the moderately priced gold coins of the Empire of Brazil. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900. In 1889, the emperor was overthrown by a conspiracy of slaveowners fearful of his advocacy of abolition. World public opinion forced the oligarchy to abolish slavery the next year anyway.
Recorded mintage: 47,000.
Specification: 17.92 g, 0.917 fine gold, .528 troy oz AGW.
