Brazil 1859 1000 reis
This specimen was lot 70382 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 1000 Reis, 1859. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. Surpassed by just one specimen in the PCGS population report, this robust Gem radiates with tremendous luster and features a charming, light tone as well. Exceptional quality that is not often encountered for the type." This thousand réis is one of a type struck in Brazil 1853-66. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is common. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.
