Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1113

This specimen was lot 1113 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €550 (about US$686 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AV 40 francs, 1829 A, Paris. presque Superbe. (France, Charles X (1824-30), gold forty francs of 1829, Paris mint, almost extremely fine.)"

A complete set of this type comprises six date and mintmark combinations. Three (1828-A, 1829-A and 1830-A) are fairly available; the other three (1826-A, 1827-A and 1830-MA) are extremely rare. The entire production run, 1826-30, totaled about 455,000 pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million.

Recorded mintage: 20,994[2], a fairly common date.

Specification: 26 mm diameter, 12.90 grams, 0.900 fine gold, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.

Catalog reference: Gad-1105; Fr-547, F.544/4, KM 721.1.
