Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55826
SB823-55826r.jpg

This specimen was lot 55826 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Westphalia. 2/3 Taler, 1812-C. Cassel Mint. Jerome Napoleon. NGC AU-55." This type was struck 1811-13 and is scarce in nice condition. Altho denominated as two-thirds thaler, it had the weight of a half thaler, a common occurrence for gulden after about 1740. When Jerome, Napoleon's brother, started showing signs of thinking independently, he was deposed and the kingdom annexed to France. At the Congress of Vienna, the area was restored to its former lords, Hannover and Prussia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.08 g, 0.994 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-117.
