This specimen was lot 1271 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRAN: Nasir al-Din Shah, 1848-1896, AR 5000 dinars, Tehran, AH1296, plain edge, with the rays extending to the left of the lion's head, semi-prooflike surfaces and presumably a very early strike from new dies or possibly even a specimen strike, traces of light surface hairlines, About Unc, RR." One thousand dinars made a kran and ten kran made a toman. The largest silver coin was the five krans. This scarce type was struck AH 1296-1297 along with a gold 5000 dinars (Fr-56).
