This specimen was lot 246 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £180 (about US$279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V (1724-1746), cob 2 reales (2), Mexico, 1727, and another with date illegible, assayer D, 6.65 g (Cal. type 212), about fine (2)." Cob two reales were struck at the Mexico mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "two bits" of pirate lore. The fineness was lowered from 0.931 to 0.917 in 1725.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rather scarce.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 6.77 g.
