from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 22127
Ceylon SB817-22127r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22127 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $305.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 5 Rupees, 1957. NGC PROOF-66 CAMEO. 2,500 Years of Buddhism. Hard mirror fields with frosted cameo devices. Brilliant and highly attractive." This commemorative is the only silver crown issued for the island before the current explosion of NCLT's. The proofs are scarce but the regular issue is common, especially in hairlined uncirculated. Ceylon attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 500,000 (the majority melted) + 1,800 proofs.

Specification: 28.26 g, 0.925 fine silver, 39 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-126.
