Ceylon 1957 rupee
This specimen was lot 70526 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. Rupee, 1957. PCGS PROOF-67 Cameo Gold Shield. Mintage: 1,800. Struck to celebrate 2,500 years of Buddhism. Tied for the finest certified for the type. Flashy and brilliant, this Superb Gem has incredible eye appeal." This commemorative accompanied a silver five rupees. It was the first rupee struck for Ceylon and was struck to the module of a postwar British florin. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000 plus 1,800 proofs.
