This specimen was lot 33608 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XVI gold 2 Louis d'Or 1788-K MS64 NGC, Bordeaux mint. A semi-Prooflike and wholly radiant offering of the type, expressing a quality of preservation much above average, and certified in tied second-finest status across the grading services to date. A minute die crack meanders the lower obverse periphery, bestowing this near-gem example with additional character." This is a common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Lille mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. Droulers states that the mintage was fraudulently underreported and that the actual mintage was likely around 425,000. This also applies to the 1789-K and 1790-K.

Recorded mintage: 18,043.

Specification: 15.29 g, .917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
