Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 213

This specimen was lot 213 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), Cu liard à la vieille tête, 1770AA, Metz. D/ T. l. à d. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Défauts de flan. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, copper liard of the old head of 1770, Metz mint. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Planchet defects, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The specimen shown is a liard à la vieille tête minted at Metz 1769-74 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was three deniers, ¼ sol or 1/480 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common[2].

Specification: pure copper, 3.06 g, 20-22 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by C.-N. Röettiers, this specimen is 3,02 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 873, Dr/2 № 608, Dupl. 1701; Gad-272; L4L 522; KM 543.2.
