This specimen was lot 50130 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CONGO. Zaire, 1970. PCGS PROOF-66 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. Struck to mark the 5th year of Joseph-Desire Mobutu's presidency. A superbly cameoed example of this modern African type with no instances of tone or haze over the surfaces. From the Pinnacle Collection." A circulation issue exists, struck in brass in large quantities. In 1971, the river and the country were renamed Zaire.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common in brass plus 1,000 in gold.
Specification: KM 13: brass; KM 13a: 32 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.9259 oz AGW.
