Congo 1970 25 makutas
This specimen was lot 5929 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €600 (about US$775 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Republik Kongo (Zaire), 1960-1971. 25 Makutas 1970. Präsident Joseph Désiré Mobutu. 7,20 g Feingold. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung PF 66 ULTRA CAMEO (6631912-014). GOLD. Polierte Platte. (republic of the Congo, twenty-five makutas of 1970, for Mobutu. Proof, graded NGC PF 66 ULTRA CAMEO.)"
This type was also struck in gold plated brass, quantity unknown. In 1971, the river and the country were renamed Zaire. The wily and despotic Mobutu survived in power until 1997. He died that year in exile, aged 66.
