This specimen was lot 888 in Scotsman's Midwest Summer Sale (St. Louis, July 2012), where it sold for $____. The catalog description noted, "1885-S PCGS MS-63 (green label) CAC. Perceptible semi-prooflike tendency emblazons the obverse, with pleasing definition noted everywhere except at a couple of stars. The reverse is "merely" lustrous, with both sides benefiting from nice, deeper golden patina." This issue from the San Francisoo mint is common but high grade examples usually bring exalted prices. The coronet head half eagle was struck 1839-1907 with the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto added in 1866. San Francisco participated in production 1854-88 and 1892-1906 with most of its issues being common.
