This specimen was lot 308 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,604 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "grote oude gouden rijder. 1623. type i. Ruiter naar rechts boven ongekroond gewestelijk wapentje MO• AV• PRO• CONFO – E• BELG• WESTFRI rozetje. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal boven de kroon. gladde rand. RR. Met miniem slagbarstje aan de rand, veroorzaakt door de handmatige slag. Zeer fraai +." The catalog calls this coin a "gold rider," a term American numismatists reserve for the similar coin of the eighteenth century valued at fourteen gulden. Of course, cavalier d'or, a French term, means the same thing. This rare type is listed for Westfriesland for 1621, 1623 and 1627.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 10 g, .920 fine gold, this specimen 9.82 g.
