This specimen was lot 23287 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Rupia, 1825. Goa Mint. Joao VI. NGC MS-62. A wonderful Rupia, with fully struck up details that exude much beauty and appeal. The design is fully on flan, an uncommon occurrence for the type, with golden highlights furthering the appeal of this example. A wonderful Rupia that would enliven any collection it might enter." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the nineteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This scarce type is listed in the SCWC for 1818-26.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
