Heritage sale 3032, lot 24653
France 1733A louis dor rev H3032-24653.jpg

This specimen was lot 24653 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XV gold Louis d'or 1733/2-A, Paris mint, MS64 NGC. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, and thus very scarce for this "aux lunettes" type. The clear 3/2 overdate is unlisted in the SCWC, but some examples have been noted. The high mintage of 195,474 pieces for this date explains this and the several other varieties encountered when studying it." This louis d'or aux lunettes was part of the great reform of 1726 which stabilized French coinage until the Revolution. Produced at 28 mints 1726-40, the type is common tho most individual dates are rare.

Recorded mintage: 195,474.

Specification: 8.15 g, .917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, designed by J. C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 800, Dr/2 no. 540, KM 489.1, Gad-340, Fr-461.
