Great Britain 1784 1/2 guinea

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 6554

This specimen was lot 6554 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $376. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Guinea, 1784. George III (1760-1820). NGC Unc Details--Obverse Scratched. Fourth head. A very attractive sharply struck piece only hampered by a thin shallow scratch extending from the E of "DEI" down to the king's ear. Attractive orange gold toning barely restraining an abundant amount of luster. Close inspection is recommended as this piece is quite nice and its noted detriment is nearly imperceptible to the naked eye." The bust of 1774 (Fr-360) must have displeased mint officials as it was replaced before 1775 was over by this portrait. The guinea did not suffer a similar blunder.
