from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24742

This specimen was lot 24742 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 2 Kopek, 1763-MM. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). NGC EF-40 BN. Nice attractive brown patina and free from any major defects." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued in large numbers 1763-96 from Moscow (shown here), St. Petersburg, Annensk, Kolyvan and Feodesia, bore mintmarks in contrast to the issue of the empress Elizabeth.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
