This specimen was lot 24742 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 2 Kopek, 1763-MM. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). NGC EF-40 BN. Nice attractive brown patina and free from any major defects." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued in large numbers 1763-96 from Moscow (shown here), St. Petersburg, Annensk, Kolyvan and Feodesia, bore mintmarks in contrast to the issue of the empress Elizabeth.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: 20.48 g, copper.
Catalog reference: KM C-58.5.
