This type, struck 1907-1909, was an attempt to revive a denomination that had lapsed since the last billon five piece was struck in 1887 during the reign of William III. Unfortunately, the design chosen almost exactly matched the billon twenty-five cent in size and this type was discontinued after 1909. When the five cent was revived in 1913, the new coin was square, one of the first non-circular coins struck in modern Europe.
