This specimen is a common date of a series struck 1874-90 at the Alamos mint, which closed in 1895. The Alamos mint used "A" as a mintmark until 1887, when it was changed to "As." This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. This specimen was lot 9043 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $345. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Alamos. 25 Centavos, 1879-AL. Toned. Ex: Richard Meyers Collection. NGC AU-53."

Specification: 6.77 g, .903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 406.
