Eliasberg lot 3135

This specimen was lot 3135 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $8,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "1757 MM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with some reverse lustre, faint horizontal scratches at upper right corner of reverse shield. Scarcely found this nice. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This very rare type was struck 1757 and 1759 only and is the last type featuring Ferdinand VI, who died in 1759.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 grams, .917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 13.51 grams, 30.10 mm diameter.
