The specimen shown is from a type struck for Guatemala since 1999. This coin is common in all grades thru uncirculated. This denomination had for many decades been covered by a one quetzal note. This type honors the peace accord of 1996 which ended the forty year war between the right wing military and leftist peasants. The peace, however, is threatened by gangs formed by criminals deported from the United States.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 11 g, nickel-brass, 29 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 284.
