Goldberg sale 128, lot 2125
G128-2125rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 2125 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. Cob 8 Reales, 1693-V (Lima). Charles II, 1665-1700. Double striking. Toned. PCGS graded AU-50." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1684-1700 for Charles II of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 27.24 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-limonite, KM-24; Calico-598; Calbeto-268.
