Goldberg sale 91, lot 2277
England G91-2277r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2277 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Half Sovereign, ND NGC AU50. Henry VIII, 1509-1547. Third coinage (1544-1547). Southwark. Obverse, king facing, seated on throne holding orb and sceptre. Reverse, crowned shield of Tudor arms. Weakly struck in parts (as usual) but with a stunning portrait of the king and practically as made. NGC graded AU-50." Lobel[2] notes that the sovereign was raised from twenty to twenty-two shillings in 1526. In 1544, the value was reduced to twenty shillings and the weight reduced from 240 grains to 200 grains. This specimen is a rare product of the Southwark mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, 100 grains.

Catalog reference: S.2297; Fr-167.
