This specimen was lot 4567 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$532 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Kaiserreich Preussen, Königreich Friedrich III. 1888. 5 Mark 1888. Fast FDC. (Kingdom of Prussia, Frederick III, five mark of 1888. Nice uncirculated.)"
This coin is a one year type issued during the short reign of Frederick as king of Prussia and Emperor of Germany. The old king, William, died in March after a 27 year reign, by which time Frederick was already dying of throat cancer. Frederick died in June and William II succeeded him, to rule until the collapse of the regime in the throes of World War One. 1888 is known as the "Dreikaisersjahr," or "Year of the Three Emperors." Even so, this type is common and is more obtainable than many issues of William II.
Recorded mintage: 200,000 plus some proofs.
