Sincona sale 64, lot 3453

This specimen was lot 3453 in Sincona sale 64 (Zurich, June 2020), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Neuenburg/Neuchâtel | Fürsten von Neuchâtel. Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. Vierer 1790, Neuchâtel. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. (principality of Neuchatel, Frederick William II, 1786-97, quarter batzen of 1790, Neuchatel mint. Rare in this condition, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

The canton of Neuchatel issued a variety of coins during the eighteenth century while the county was under Prussian administration. This type was struck 1789-94 and is not rare. It was accompanied by a half kreuzer, half batzen (two kreuzer) and four kreuzer (batzen). In the nineteenth century, forty batzen = four franken = one thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen: 0.57 g.

Catalog reference: KM 46, D.T. 1002b, HMZ 2-713b.
