Austria 1866-A 2 thaler Dav-24

Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 323

This specimen was lot 323 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description^[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 2 Taler, 1866-A. NGC MS-65. Very scarce and popular two year type. Sharply struck. Lightly toned with attractive underlying luster. An exceptional example of this large silver crown." After 1867, Bismarck forced Austria out of German affairs and the Hapsburgs thereafter had little reason to conform to German monetary conventions. This scarce type was struck 1866-67 only and represents the last of the denomination. The thaler was dropped after 1868 and in 1892 the corona was adopted.
