This specimen was lot 2496 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it sold for $616.87. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Two Pounds, 1996. Elizabeth II. Reverse: Soccer ball. In original case." This commemorative honoring the tenth European Football Championship is another in an extensive series of NCLT's struck in multiple metals for the elite and the common herd.
Recorded mintage: 5,141,000 (bimetallic) plus 100,000 proofs plus 25,163 in silver and 2,098 in gold.
Specification: KM 973: 15.98 g, nickel brass, 28.4 mm diameter; KM 973a: 15.98 g, .925 fine silver; KM 973b: 15.98 g, .917 fine gold.
