This specimen was lot 23568 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $1,035. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Salzburg. Michael of Kuenberg gold Ducat 1558, XF40 NGC, St. Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg is standing, ornate arms are found on the reverse. A most desirable early gold type of the Archbishopric." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.
