Salzburg 1557 ducat Fr-614
This specimen was lot 29360 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,938.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Salzburg. Michael von Küenburg gold Ducat 1557 MS62 NGC. A lovely Mint State example of this rare type. Minimal striking weakness is noted and the lustrous surfaces accentuate the charming portrait of St. Rupert, the patron of the city." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.
