Künker sale 384, part of lot 2591

This specimen was part of lot 2591 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €340 (about US$439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Michael von Küenburg, 1554-1560. Guldiner 1557, 1559. 28,22 g und 28,53 g. Dav-8170 (2x); Probszt 420, 423; Zöttl 466 (Type 1), 468 (Type 1). 2 Stück., Fast sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Michael of Küenburg, 1554-60, guldiners of 1557 and 1559. Two pieces, about very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type is listed for 1555-59 with a posthumous issue of 1569. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
