Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 222

This specimen was lot 222 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €200 (about US$292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AR dixième d'écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1779AA, Metz. D/ B. habillé à g., les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Belle patine. Gradé PCGS MS62. Superbe. Provient de la collection Teitgen, Paris, 26-28 octobre 2015, 956. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, silver tenth écu of the olive branches of 1779, Metz mint. Obverse: uniformed bust left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: crowned arms of France between olive branches. Nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"

This tenth écu au buste habillé, the equivalent of a dime, was struck at the Metz mint in 1779, 1782, 1784 during the reign of Louis XVI of France. Droulers[2] lists this date as scarce but not rare.

Recorded mintage: 40,176[2].

Specification: 2.95 g, .917 fine silver, .087 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 21-22 mm diameter.
