Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collectors Choice sale, lot 72451
SB1020-72451r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72451 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. United East India Company. Duit, 1753. Zeeland Mint. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. A decently struck, wholesome, and well centered Duit with a very dark, almost charcoal patina." This duit, struck with the arms of Zeeland, was issued 1753-92. It varied from the prior KM 152.2 by deleting the dots bracketing the date. Holland, Westfriesland, Gelderland and Utrecht also struck duits for the East Indies. Presentation strikes exist in silver and gold but not for this type. The collapse of the United Provinces during the French Revolution ended the issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 3.62 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM-152.3.
