This specimen was lot 3057 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1150. The catalog description[1] noted, "1872 P 5 pesos. MS-62 (NGC). Head of Liberty to left, legends and value around/quetzal on scroll with crossed rifles, in wreath, date, fineness, assayer below. Bright yellow gold with strong lustre and reflective surfaces. Light handling marks in the fields, a pleasing specimen of the first year of this design type. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel, April 18, 1945." This type was struck 1872-78; all the dates are scarce and some are rare. The liberty head design also appears on the rare 20 pesos of 1877.
