Guatemala 1872-P 2 reales
This specimen was lot 74240 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 2 Reales, 1872-P. Nueva Guatemala Mint. PCGS MS-61. Displaying a marvelous mixture of cobalt, magenta, and almond hues, this less commonly encountered 2 Reales is pleasing and worthy of an equally attractive bid. From the Hobart Collection." By this date, Guatemala was just about the last country in Latin America not to have converted to decimal coinage. The regime made several attempts to introduce such coinage in the 1880's, each time swiftly rejected by the populace. This type was also struck in 1873.
