from Stack's Bowers 2026 NYINC sale, lot 42283
SB126-42283r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 75027 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. 1/2 Kreutzer, 1795. Mainz Mint. Friedrich Karl Josef. NGC MS-65 Brown." Soldiers of revolutionary France occupied Mainz in October 1792, causing the archbishop to flee. Coalition forces besieged and captured the city in July 1793 after a heavy bombardment. The archbishop struck quarter, half, one, five and ten kreuzer in 1795-96, just before his domain was annexed by the French republic. The archbishopric was mediatized in 1803. The second specimen was lot 42283 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. Gold Off-Metal Kreuzer of 1/2 Ducat Weight, 1795-IA. Mainz Mint. Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal. NGC MS-64. An astonishing near-Gem survivor of this intriguing gold off-metal issue. Clearly struck from fresh dies, the fields awash with watery and nearly Prooflike luster and with an impressively struck-up portrait."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.6 g, copper, 22.7 mm diameter. The second specimen is gold, 1.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM-403. The second specimen is KM-Pn23; Walther-658; Pick-794.
