Sincona sale 98, lot 4336

This specimen was lot 4336 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$363 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Obwalden, 20 Kreuzer 1728, Sarnen. Die 2 der Jahreszahl verkehrt. Schräg gerippter Rand. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Zuberbühler, Auktion SINCONA 16, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 5793. (Switzerland, half canton of Obwalden, twenty kreuzer of 1728, Sarnen mint. The '2' in the date is reversed, obliquely reeded edge. Rare in this condition, Very Fine.)"

Unterwalden was one of the three original cantons forming the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Far from the main channels of commerce, her coinage is scanty and rare. Unterwalden was divided into the "half cantons" of Obwalden and Nidwalden. This type was struck 1726-30, 1736, 1742-43 and was worth one-sixth of a convention thaler. The similar KM 14 (struck 1726, 1729-32) has the date on the shield side.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 4.12 g.

Catalog reference: KM 13, Greter (SMK IV) 33. D.T. 615b, HMZ 2-735f.
