Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34172

This specimen was lot 34172 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1810-L. Bayonne Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-30. Variety with mintmark to right. The VERY RARE variety with the 'L' to the right of the date, this circulated specimen remains highly original and pleasing. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Chelsea Coins [Dimitri Loulakakis] at COINEX London on 12 October 1990 for $40)." In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. The reverse was revised in 1809 from REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE to EMPIRE FRANÇAISE and struck in this style thru 1814. This date from the Bayonne mint is very rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,629^[2].

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
