Zurich 1559 8 ducats Fr-427
This specimen was lot 5613 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 42,000 CHF (about US$63,303 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ. Zürich. Stadt und Kanton. 8 Dukaten 1559, Zürich. Goldabschlag des Talers von J. Stampfer. + MON • NO • THVRICENSIS • CIVITATIS • IMPERIALIS Gekröntes Reichswappen von zwei Löwen, darunter zwei Stadtwappen (gespiegelt) und die Jahreszahl. Rv. Stadtwappen von Zürich, umher • DNE SERVA NOS IN PACE, aussen im Kreis die neun Vogteiwappen von Kyburg, Grüningen, Regensburg, Eglisau, Greifensee, Andelfingen, Knonau, Wädenswil und Laufen, zwischen den Wappenschilden lilienartige Verzierungen. Obverse: crowned imperial coat of arms supported by two lions, below are two city coats of arms (mirrored) and the date; reverse: City arms of Zürich, surrounded by • DNE SERVA NOS IN PACE, in the outer circle the nine bailiwick arms of Kyburg, Grüningen, Regensberg, Eglisau, Greifensee, Andelfingen, Knonau, Wädenswil and Laufen, with lily-like ornaments between the shields. Of the highest rarity, Good Very Fine.)"
The thaler dies (Dav-8780) were also used to strike double and triple thalers and nine (Fr-426) and ten ducats (Fr-425) as well as various klippes. Impractical for circulation, they were probably intended for presentation.
