This specimen was lot 22980 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $470. The catalog description[1] noted, "SENEGAL. Franc, 1921. NGC MS-64. Medal Rotation brass token. Ziguinchor Chamber of Commerce. Originally a Portuguese outpost and embarkation point for the slave trade, the area was ceded to France in 1888, hence the Franc denomination. Light streaky toning with underlying luster. Fully original and near gem." The economic dislocation following World War One was most severely felt in Germany and Austria but also in France and her colonies as well. A shortage of coin forced local merchants to issue tokens, including this brass issue from the Chamber of Commerce of Ziguinchor. Ziguinchor lies in the southern part of the country, on the other side of the Gambia from Dakar. The SCWC lists twenty different tokens from the colony of Senegal, all scarce to rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: brass.

Catalog reference: KM-Tn18; Lec-15.
