Ziguinchor 1921 50 centimes
This specimen was lot 75652 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "SENEGAL. Ziguinchor Chamber of Commerce. Brass 50 Centimes Token, 1921. NGC MS-65. Medal rotation. NGC census: 1, 1 finer. Lightly toned with a medley of soft hues, this impressive century-old Gem is sure to please specialists who have yet to add an example to their sets." The economic dislocation following World War One was most severely felt in Germany and Austria but also in France and her colonies as well. A shortage of coin forced local merchants to issue tokens, including this brass issue from the Chamber of Commerce of Ziguinchor. Ziguinchor lies in the southern part of the country, on the other side of the Gambia from Dakar. The SCWC lists twenty different tokens from the colony of Senegal, all scarce to rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: brass.
