Zamosc 1813(b) 2 zlote
This specimen was lot 40737 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Zamosc. 2 Zlote, 1813. NGC AU-55. Very scarce as a type and RARE in this quality. Only 7,830 pieces were struck during the siege of Zamosc. Coinage of the 2 Zlote was completed by November 22, 1813, two days later Zamosc surrendered to the Russian army. The [R]ussians ordered the coins melted." The closing stages of the Napoleonic Wars saw a brief spike in the production of siege coinage as the French and their allies retreated. Subsequent wars (with a few exceptions) did not see the long sieges needed for the creation of such emergency coinage.
